The Ten Gods (Shi Shen) Explained

Ten relationships defined from the Day Master

The Ten Gods (Shi Shen in Chinese, Sipsin in Korean) is the most powerful interpretive tool in Saju. Taking the Day Master (the heavenly stem of your day of birth) as the reference point, the other seven characters in your chart fall into ten relational categories. With this lens, a chart becomes a precise map of personality, talent, relationships, and life flow.

Friend (Bijian) and Rival (Jiecai)

Bijian is a stem of the same element and same polarity as the Day Master. It signifies siblings, peers, and rivals. A balanced amount lends drive and independence; an excess produces stubbornness and difficulty collaborating.

Jiecai shares the same element but opposite polarity. It represents siblings of a more competitive sort and warns of wealth being taken away. Used well, it becomes a powerful competitive edge.

Eating God (Shishen) and Hurting Officer (Shangguan)

Shishen is the element you generate, with the same polarity. It symbolizes self-expression, abundance, and (for women) children. Charts with Shishen tend toward optimism, artistic ability, and freedom from material worry.

Shangguan is what you generate with opposite polarity. It brings creative brilliance and a refusal to be bound by rules, but because it harms the Officer star, it can bring instability to career and authority figures.

Indirect Wealth (Piancai) and Direct Wealth (Zhengcai)

Piancai is the element you control with the same polarity. It symbolizes large fortunes, entrepreneurship, the father, and lovers. Strong Piancai suggests business talent and the ability to handle large sums, paired with volatility.

Zhengcai is the element you control with opposite polarity. It represents stable wealth, earned reward, and (for men) the spouse. It is the wealth of patient effort and good management.

Seven Killings (Qisha) and Direct Officer (Zhengguan)

Qisha (also Pianguan) is the element that controls you with the same polarity. It represents military command, raw power, and challenge. It grants drive and charisma but, under pressure, can manifest as injury or illness.

Zhengguan is what controls you with opposite polarity. It represents civil authority, honor, and responsibility. It signifies social position, legitimate power, public service, and (for women) the husband. A well-placed Zhengguan brings both reputation and accountability.

Indirect Resource (Pianyin) and Direct Resource (Zhengyin)

Pianyin (also Xiaoshen) is what generates you with the same polarity. It represents unusual learning, religion, art, and intuition. Deep thinkers and unique talents often have it, but balance with Shishen is needed to avoid material hardship.

Zhengyin is what generates you with opposite polarity. It represents orthodox study, mother, documents, certificates, and seals. Many scholars have prominent Zhengyin — it is the most receiving and protective of the Ten Gods.

The Ten Gods is the most three-dimensional way to read a chart. Which gods are strong, which are missing — together they reveal vocation, relationship patterns, and the flow of wealth and honor in a life.
