How the compatibility score is calculated
Five parts, 100 points
We look at five relationships between the two charts separately and add up the points: the two day stems (30 points), the two day branches (25), how the two charts fill each other's missing elements (20), the month branches (15), and the year branches (10).
Good Saju gives the most weight to the day stem and the day branch, because the day stem stands for each person and the day branch is the spouse position. The month and year branches count for less.
Day stems (30 points)
If the two day stems form a stem combination (Gap-Gi, Eul-Gyeong, Byeong-Sin, Jeong-Im, Mu-Gye) the score is 30. If their elements generate each other it is 25, the same element gives 20, and elements that control each other give 10.
Branches (day 25, month 15, year 10)
Branches in the same position are compared. A six harmony scores 25, a pair from the same three harmony 22, a pair from the same directional group 20, the same branch or no combination, clash or punishment 15, a punishment 8, and a clash 5.
The day branch uses this score as is, while the month branch is scaled to 60% and the year branch to 40%, so they top out at 15 and 10 points.
Elemental complement (20 points)
When one person lacks an element that the other has, we treat it as the two filling each other in. The score starts at 10 and adds 5 for each such element, up to 20.
Separately from the score, the result also shows whether each person carries the other's Useful God element.
A worked example
Take a man born on May 2, 1988 at 8:40 a.m. (Jeong-Sa day pillar) and a woman born on November 9, 1989 at 8:40 p.m. (Gye-Yu day pillar).
Their day stems, Jeong (fire) and Gye (water), stand in a controlling relationship, so they score 10. Their day branches, Sa and Yu, belong to the same three harmony, so they score 22. His chart has no metal or water while hers has both, so the elemental complement is 20. Their month branches (Jin and Hae) and year branches (Jin and Sa) form no combination, clash or punishment, scoring 9 and 6.
The total is 67. The day stems clash, but the spouse position and the elemental makeup support the pairing.
How to read the score
The score expresses, in numbers, the relationship two charts form under traditional theory. It does not decide whether a relationship will work. Without a birth time the hour pillar drops out, which can change the elemental complement score.
Unlike almanac calculations, compatibility scoring has no fixed standard, so other services giving different numbers is normal. The result lists every part with its reasoning, which is more useful than the total alone.
