How to Find Your Useful God (Yongsin)

The element that unlocks your fortune

Yongsin (Yong Shen in Chinese, "the useful god") is the single most important concept in Saju. It is the element that benefits your chart the most — not simply the one you lack, but the one that balances the entire structure and opens the way for fortune to flow.

Four methods for finding the Useful God

Yifu method (抑扶): If the Day Master is too strong, restrain it; if too weak, support it. A strong Day Master needs Food/Wealth/Officer to release and regulate; a weak one needs Resource/Friend to support. This is the most common approach.

Tiaohou method (調候): Adjust the chart's climate. A winter-born chart needs Fire to warm it; a summer-born chart needs Water to cool it. The classical text Qiong Tong Bao Jian catalogues these patterns in detail.

Tongguan method (通關): When two elements clash strongly, the element between them becomes the Useful God. If Wood and Earth fight, Fire (which Wood generates and which generates Earth) becomes the bridge.

Bingyao method (病藥): Identify the harmful "disease" in the chart and use its remedy. When a strong unfavorable element exists, find the element that suppresses it.

Useful God, Happy God, Taboo God, Foe God

Yongsin (Useful God): the central element that holds the chart together and opens fortune.

Huisin (Happy God): the element that supports and protects the Useful God. If Yongsin is the king, Huisin is the loyal minister.

Gisin (Taboo God): the element that attacks or weakens the Useful God. When strong, effort yields disappointing results.

Gusin (Foe God): the element that supports the Taboo God, weakening the Useful God further.

Applying your Useful God in daily life

Knowing your Useful God lets you tilt fortune in small ways every day. Spend more time facing the direction associated with your Useful God — east for Wood, south for Fire, center for Earth, west for Metal, north for Water.

Choose clothes, interiors, and cars in the color of your Useful God: blue/green (Wood), red (Fire), yellow (Earth), white (Metal), black/dark blue (Water).

Pursue work that resonates with your Useful God. Fire suits expression, hospitality, performance; Water suits research, logistics, and study; and so on.

The Useful God is not a mystical verdict but a practical tool. Knowing yours, and applying it in directions, colors, and daily choices, lets you draw out the latent potential within your chart.
